Engineering Properties of Plastic Waste as a Binding Material

Abstract

This project is about the structural design and analysis of G+5 hotel building considering all the effects that the building receives in its service life. The project is located in Addis Ababa city at 2355m above sea level.Structural design involves proportioning of structural members of the building and providing reinforcement which results economical. In short, the main structural designs included the paper is as follows. The roof is a flat RC roof. It design deals with analysis of the external forces that the roof is exposed then checked for their strength against the applied wind, dead and live loads that they are subjected to.Our buildings floors are all constructed with a solid RC slab. We have designed the slab for serviceability and ultimate limit state. Therefore, we have selected a depth which satisfies deflection requirement and provided flexural and shear reinforcement. The circulation system in our building is facilitated by a dog logged stair type. It was designed by analyzing the stair for all loads it is subjected to through its service life and provided with adequate reinforcement. The lateral load analysis includes both wind and earthquake load analysis. We have calculated the base shear and distributed to the frames according to their stiffness by finding the frame shears. The frame was analyzed using ETABS 2015.After generating the analysis result, we designed beams and columns by assuming a preliminary Disposal of plastic waste in environment is considered as big problem due to its very low biodegradability and presence in large quantities. The abundance of different types of waste plasticis a major problem for the sustainability of the environment by polluting rivers, land, road, oceans, as well as it increases global warming. Even there is different type of plastics, the paper focus on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic. Therefore, finding alternative methods of disposing these wastes by using friendly method is becoming a major research issue. As a result, the paper studies the engineering property of waste plastic as a binding and construction material instead of cement. In order to answer the research question, plastic waste was prepared, melt and moulded to the desired shape, similarly compressive strength tests were conducted in laboratory. Finally, it indicates how the terephthalate (PET) plastic waste can be used as a binding and construction material with property of lightweight, flexible, strong, moisture-resistant, cheap and easily available and can make it as a binding to replace cement or alternative material to many existing composite construction materials like bricks, tiles, terrazzo etc
