Abstract

Wood is the primary raw material used to manufacture pulp and paper. So, depending on some criteria we chose eucalyptus tree. These raw materials are available in our country, can produce fiber or cellulose for pulp and paper industries under relatively short rotation; can grow adequately in a wide range of ecological conditions, of Ethiopia. The general objective of this project was to produce pulp from eucalyptus tree. In this project we have done three Experiments. The first experiment was done as for comparison of the two basic pulping methods i.e. Kraft and soda pulping. In the second experiment we have done four trials based on Kraft pulping only. When we compare the two processes ( i.e.) Soda and Kraft) though Soda process requires only one chemical but in large amounts and take many time and energy to effectively break the lignin bonds. Kraft process requires fewer amounts of different chemicals and also helps in complete lignin molecule breakage. From this we can conclude that Kraft process is more advantageous. We try do material and energy balance at laboratory level and Industrial level, material sizing and to evaluate techno economic feasibility of pulp production from eucalyptus tree.
