Abstract
Group discussion enables learners to use the language and encourage their collection and
linked learning. The main objective of this study was investigating student’s interest in
group discussion: the case of Bade primary school grade 7thA, Gummer woreda, Guraghe
zone, SNNPR. To conduct this study, the researcher was used descriptive research design
and thus it would be both quantitative and qualitative research method. To achieve the
objective necessary data were used. Primary data was collected through questionnaires
distributed to primary school teachers in the study area and structured interview were
prepared for selected students. The researcher used simple random sampling for the
students. Secondary data collected from review documents, journals and books. Finally, the
collected data were processed, analyzed and interpret by using different table, percentage.
The major findings were revealed that most of the students had positive interest toward
English lesson group discussion, student’s participation in group discussion attributed to
different factors. Such as students’ low level of knowledge about the benefit of group
discussion, large class size which challenges the manageability of the group work in class,
due to the large size of the class it was difficult for the teacher to measure students during
group discussion. Recommendation and conclusion were forwarded bases on the findings.
The researcher concluded that group discussion has positive impacts on student learning
performance.
