FINAL YEAR PROJECT ON GENALE DAWA SIX HYDRO POWER PROJEC

Abstract

The Genale Dawa hydropower project design aims at utilizing the potential of Genale river to generate electricity, to support the power demand in the country. The power plant is located approximately 80km east of Negele, in Liben Zone of the Somali National Regional State. The project area is approximately 700km by road south and east of Addis Ababa on river Genale. The flow for hydrologic analysis is transported to the proposed dam site using a coefficient incorporating catchments area ratios. The estimated annual sediment transported to the reservoir is about 1Mm3/year. A designing flood of 1800m3/s corresponding to 1000 year return period is chosen for designing the hydraulic structures. Taking in to consideration the topography, economical aspects and the geological characteristics of the dam site gravity dam is found to be feasible. The dam height is 95m above the river bed including 6.51m height of spillway. The live and dead storage amount is 615 and 76.923Mm 3 respectively. The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been prepared in compliance with Ethiopian ESIA procedures and in accordance with international standards, as reflected in the policies, safeguard procedures, and guidelines of the African Development Bank. The analysis of hydrological data, transposing of data from given station into the dam site, reservoir planning, dam dimension fixing and stability analysis, spillway structure and energy dissipating structure design are considered in this paper
