Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the challenges and opportunities of ethnic federalism in
handling ethnic diversity in case of sodo woreda in gurage zone . The objectives were to assess
the implementation of ethinic federalism in managing ethinic diversity , to identify the challenges
of ethnic federalism in handling ethnic diversity in sodo woreda, to examine the opportunities of
ethnic federalism in handling ethnic diversity. The target populations of this study was sodo
woreda administration office. In this study the researcher used descriptive research design. This
study used both primary and secondary data source . in case of primary data sources key
informants interview used to collect data and various literature related to an assessing the
challenges and opportunities of ethnic federalism in handling ethnic diversity were examined
together secondary data source . Systematic sampling technique was employed to select
respondents for key informants interview .for interview 6 respondents were taken as sample from
sodo woreda administration employees.the finding was analyzed by qualitative research
techniques.the major findings of this research showed that the challenges of federalism in
handling ethnic diversity were;low level of awareness of ethnic federalism and,lack of
democratic principles in practical and,political instability.and the opportunities of ethnic
federalism in handling ethnic diversity were it encourages the minority ethnic group,it gives the
right to self determination to promote ones own culture ,language,custom and beliefs .on the
basis of this finding reached the recommendations were forwarded by looking the remedial
solution to the challenges of ethnic federalism in handling ethnic diversity such as the
government officials should create awareness to the people ,the employees should focus on
equalizing and stabilizatio
