During the 1970s, it was common to perform an episiotomy for almost all women having their first delivery, apparently for prevention of severe perineum tears and easier subsequent repair. World Health Organization recommends an episiotomy rate of about 10% or less. However, the finding from studies conducted in different parts of Ethiopia revealed that the magnitude of episiotomy practice range above 30%.
