Abstract

This study investigated the influence of parental values, and practice on the academic achievement of children. The study was initiated with a major objective to investigate the degree and direction of relationship between parental child rearing variables (value and practice) and their children’s academic competence. Random sampling (lottery) method was applied to select 91 child and respondent identified from a school of the sample children. The data collected was analyzed using percentage frequency and description organized through table. analysis show that most parents view the parental values and practices as important for promoting and shaping the academic behavior of children. These variables of parents were also found to consistently agree with each other’s. While the values were influenced and vary by the family income, educational status and occupation of the sample parents; the value and practices were observed to vary on the variables of family income and mothers’ educational status. On the other side the analysis of the academic competence of children indicated that majority of them assumed the qualities of the academic behaviors.
