Abstract
This study was conducted to assess practices of student centred teaching method in Amanuel
secondary school in Debire Markos administrative town. The main purpose of this study was
to assess the Practices of active learning, to identify factors affecting the implementation of
active learning either positively or negatively in terms of teachers` commitment, classroom
conditions, instructional facilities and teachers training. To analyze this descriptive survey
design was employed. Data were collected from 32 teachers, 1school principal and 1
supervisor. In the selection of sample population purposive and random techniques were
used. The instruments of data collection were questionnaire, interview and observation
checklist. The data were analysed using percentage. The findings of the study proved that the
implementation of active learning was low. Among the factors affecting the implementation
of active learning, teachers training, teachers` commitment, classroom conditions, class size,
beliefs and interests of teachers in their profession were the major ones. Finally, the
following recommendations were forwarded, it is important to conduct in- service training so
that their use of active learning strategies will be improved, Even if appropriate class size
may not always be possible, the implementers of active learning should see alternative
solutions such as, dividing students into groups, demonstration fields, field trip, laboratories
and others
