Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to assess the ef ective implementation of student-centered
teaching method, to identify factors af ecting the implementation of student-centered teaching method. To this end mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative approaches) were used to conduct the study. The study was conducted in Wolkite University, College of Education and Behavioral Studies third
year students. Data were collected from 20 instructors including the department heads and 60
students. In the selection of the sample, simple random sampling technique was used. The instruments
of data collection were questionnaire, interview and observation. The collected data through close
ended questionnaire were analyzed using percentage and number, however data collected through
open ended questionnaire, interview and observation were analyzed qualitatively by using word
explanation. The findings of the study proved that the implementation of student centered method was
low due to several factors af ecting the implementation of student centered teaching method, including vast content, shortage of time, providing most courses in modality, low instructors' and
students commitment, unconducive classroom environment ,class size, students` unwillingness to
learn cooperatively, weak perceptions of instructors` and students towards the method, and poor
seating arrangements were the major ones . Finally, the following recommendations were forwarded, it is important to conduct short- and long-term training, avoiding block courses and preparing in a
semester based, should motivate students, create awareness are some of the recommendations
forwarded on this paper
