Abstract
The main objective of this study was to assess the role of community participation on solid
waste management practices in Gubre sub city. Cross-sectional and Descriptive research
design was employed to answer basic research questions and there by achieve the intended
objective of the study. The target population in this research were include household heads,
municipality officials, health workers and sanitation (purification) experts working within
of the sample sub-city of this study area. Totally (93) representative participants were
selected using different sampling methods (systematic simple random, availability, and
purposive sampling methods). The Gubre sub-city has (1246 households: one healthy centre
and one municipality). After determining the total population of the household, (89) heads
of households of which 42 male and 47 female were selected by using systematic sampling
method randomly. Besides (2) Municipality officials (head/ Mayer and vice head/ Deputy
Mayer) were selected using availability sampling method purposively, and (2)
representatives of health experts were selected by using purposive sampling method. Self administer closed-ended, four-point and five-point liker scale questionnaire was prepared
and distributed for 89 household representatives and filled and returned for analysis. In depth interview tool was conducted to gather necessary data from (4) potential participants
of this study. The data obtained from these participants presented to analyzed and
interpreted using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Finally, the findings of this
study reveal that the existing level of community awareness on many areas of solid waste
management practices were found at very low level; there was also lack of commitments,
poor encouragement supports were made by concerned bodies to facilitate community
participation on solid waste management practice; and due to these reasons, the situation
of community participation on Solid Waste Management Practices within the sample sub city was low. Thus, local concerned bodies need to facilitate individuals, NGOs, private
sectors, CBOs, and others to enhance the contributions of the community in Solid Waste
Management Practices of this study area
