Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the current practice of educational materials management and utilization in yaberus general secondary school of gurage zone SNNPR. The study particularly, based on purchasing, planning, storing, inventorying and disposing of unused of educational materials management and utilization. To accomplish this purpose, the study employed a descriptive method, which was supplemented by qualitative to enrich data. The study carried out in wolkite town elected government secondary schools of yaberus . Then 50 teachers, and 5 PTA members were selecting using random sampling techniques and 1 store keeper, 1 lab technician and 1 librarian were selected by using sampling techniques. 2 school vice principals were also involved in the study for interviewing. Questionnaire was the main instrument of data collection. Interview was utilized to substantiate the data gained through the questionnaire. Percentage, mean and standard deviation were utilized to analyze the questionnaire. The qualitative data obtained through interview were analyzed using narration. The result of the study revealed that the management and utilization of educational materials in yaberus general secondary schools were in effective. School faced difficult task of without having prior training, planning, purchasing, storing, inventorying, maintaining and disposing unused materials in schools. Furthermore, the study revealed that, lack of trained personnel, lack of budget, lack of reference books, lack of science laboratories and inadequate of materials hinder the implementation of teaching learning in schools. Finally, recommendations drawn based on the above, findings. The point of the recommendations includes awareness on the management and utilization of educational materials through seminars, workshops and discussion forums to improve quality of teaching and learning process. Moreover, suggestions forwarded to solve the factors that hinder proper management and utilization of educational materials in yaberus general secondary schools
