Abstract
This study aimed to examines the socio-economic conditions and challenges faced by women
street vendors in Wolkite, Ethiopia. It aims to provide insight into the experiences of women
traders, particularly in terms of the environment they operate within and the manner in which
they navigate the socio-economic landscape. The study employs qualitative research methods,
including interviews and focus groups, to gather data on the challenges and opportunities
inherent in street vending. The findings indicate that street vending facilitates opportunities for
women traders to earn a living and support their households, but they also face numerous
challenges such as lack of infrastructure, looting, physical and psychological harassment,
problems related with customers, expensiveness and damaging of goods and legal business
competitors. This study recommends that the government should focus on improving the socio economic environment for women street vendors by providing access to credit, infrastructure,
education, licensing, and legal protection
