Abstract
Political parties serve as the motive force in unaccountable or the condition of the being
crystalline public opinions and as unifying agency which make democracy workable. This study
focused on the challenge and prospect of multi-party system and democratization in Ethiopia.
Research employed qualitative method of data to manage this study efficiently and to gain
reliable information. The study was conducted by using primary data and secondary data
sources. The primary data was gathered through interview method and secondary data was
collected mainly from book, Internet, newspaper and magazines. The data was collected from 5
selected from a leader who were purposively selected due to their connection with the issue
raised. The finding of the research showed that cooperation among political parties, and giving
priority for their own interest instead of working for the development of democracy are the major
factors that hinder political parties from contributing their own share for the development of
democracy. Moreover, the finding of the research also showed that there is strong linkage
between democracy and political parties. Finally, it is recommended that political parties (the
ruling parties and opposition parties) should work together for the development of democracy by
discussing and developing the culture of tolerance.
