ASSESSMENT OF THE OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OF ADOPTING ELECTRONIC BANKING THE CASE OF COMMERCIAL BANK OF ETHIOPIA, GUBRYE BRANCH

Abstract

This study was aimed at assessing opportunities and challenges of adopting electronic banking in commercial bank of Ethiopia in the case of Gubrye branch. The general objective of the study was assessment of the opportunities and challenges of adopting electronic banking from these three specific issues were described. Primary data were collected usng a self administered questionnaire comprised of both open ended and close ended questions. Employees and customers were participants of the study. While census was used for employees I used probability (convinience) sampling technique for selecting the sample of electronic banking customers because of the large number of the target population it is convinient to use. And also descriptive method of data analysis was used in summarizing the collected data and the data analysis has been performed by using tabulation and percentage and interpreted in accordance with the indication of the analysis result. Results the study shows that the benefits of adopting and developing E-banking technology are such as increase productivity, reduces paper work, reduce transaction cost, increase reliability and improve customer service, reduce long queues in banking hall, increase accessibility of the bank services, create good relation among banks and customers. The study also indicated existing opportunities for E-banking adoption and growth such as improvement in the banking habit of the society. The study recommended banks to facilitate proper and continuous creation of awareness by using different mediums, increasing security for Ebanking products, create deep awareness about E-banking technology to the community while the government should support adoption of new e-banking systems by facilitating sufficient ICT infrastructure development.
