Abstract
To survive and grow organizations must be constantly kept up to date through effective training and development programs. Employee training and development is especially important in industries with rapidly changing technology such as banking industries. Having this in mind, the study was conducted in commercial bank of Ethiopia to assess employee training and development practices. To carry out this research the researcher used a descriptive research design and targeted 30 employees as a respondent. Census method was applied since the total numbers of employees were known and it was easy to collect data from all employees about training and development practice. The data were collected through structured and standard questionnaire and also structured and unstructured interview were used. The primary data have been generated from managers and non managers of the enterprise and secondary data from articles; full sized papers, books and internet, then it become edited, classified, organized and presented via tables and pie-charts. Finally as per the data being analyzed the researcher concluded that the bank provided on the job training through demonstration and examples. Training and development have a high effect on performance of employees. There are problems encountered to provide and during training. The most challenging problem among others is shortage of time.
