Abstract

This study focus on describing the role of educational affirmative action to the academic achievement of female students in Abafrenswa preparatory School in Gubre town, Affirmative action is a policy or program that seeks to redress past discrimination through active measure to ensure equal opportunity, as in education and employment. In this study researchers used both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Questionnaire used as quantitative data gathering which include open and close ended questions, and qualitative data was collected through interview by preparing semi structure interview guide line. The quantitative data which obtained through was interpreted in questionnaire was shown by tables, percentages and frequency whereas the qualitative data in the thematic explanation form of the sampling technique that used in this study was both probability and non-probability. From probability sampling technique we used systematic random sampling whereas in non-probability sampling we used purposive sampling technique. By using systematic random sampling we selected 80 samples from the total population (412) whereas by using non probability sampling we selected 3 respondents of whom, 1 the school director and 2 were teachers in the school.. This study shows that the rational and purposeful implementation of affirmative action is very crucial to improve the academic achievement of female students. Researchers forwarded a recommendation as raising awareness plays a pivotal role in understanding the practice and policies of affirmative action. The affirmative action implementation taken by woreda and other lower institution women affairs office and other responsible offices should review the measurement taken by the lower responsible institution, to fill the implementation gap should be revisited by higher bodies at responsibility to the implement affirmative action program.
