    (wolkite universty, 2025-08) BISRAT TIRUHA
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the performance management system on employee motivation, specifically through a comparative analysis between public and private commercial banks operating in the Gurage Zone. The study utilized descriptive survey and explanatory research designs, employing both quantitative and qualitative approaches. It applied purposive, simple random, and proportionate stratified sampling techniques to select the branches and employees involved in the research. The target population comprised employees of public and private banks within the branches of the Gurage Zone, with a sample size of 251 participants. Primary data were collected through self-administered questionnaires distributed to clerical employees from the selected branches, as well as through interviews conducted with randomly selected branch managers. Additionally, secondary data sources were utilized by reviewing relevant documents pertaining to the performance management system and employee motivation. Quantitative data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 26 software, with findings presented through descriptive statistics, including frequency tables, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Moreover, multiple linear regression and independent samples t-test were employed to assess the effects and statistical differences between the public and private commercial banks. Qualitative data were collected and narrated systematically using a content analysis approach to support the quantitative data analysis results. The finding of the study revealed significant differences on performance assessment, performance reward practices as well as on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of employees between the public and private CBs. Therefore, from these results it can be inferred that a statistically significant advantage in the implementation of performance management practices within private commercial banks compared to public institutions. Moreover, public CB employees exhibit higher levels of intrinsic motivation as compared to their counterparts. Conversely, extrinsic motivation is significantly higher among employees of private commercial banks. Therefore, the study recommended that public commercial banks consider adopting best practices from their private counterparts, particularly in the realms of performance assessment and rewards. Implementing mechanisms to enhance their performance management systems can help bridge the gap, allowing them to compete more effectively and improve their overall service quality.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING ENTERPRISES IN GURAGE ZONE, CENTRAL ETHIOPIA
    (wolkite universty, 2025-08) ASAYEHEGN GIZACHEW
Manufacturing Enterprises (MEs) have an important role to play for the development of the country. Strong MEs sectors contribute a lot to the development of economy, by raising the gross domestic product, by reducing unemployment and poverty levels and also serve as promotion of entrepreneurship activities. However, many problems encounter MEs and as a result, many firms perform dismally and fail to grow. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate factors affecting the performance of MEs in Gurage Zone, Central Ethiopia Regional State. The MEs are currently functional on various sectors. In this study, the target population was 673 MEs. The study used probability sampling methods in which the target population was sampled using stratified random sampling technique so that all manufacturing enterprises were included and then proportionately selected to give a sample size of 225 managers/owners. Data sources were primary and secondary and these data were collected using questionnaire and interview. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression model were employed to analyze the collected quantitative data using a Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26. The findings of the study reveal that the performances of the majority of the selected MEs were at low level. In addition, the six variables – current capital; managerial competency and skill, access to credit; access to raw materials; enterprise size; and regulatory framework have significant and positive correlation with the performance of MEs ranging from strong to very strong. Furthermore, these variables were significantly and positively affected the performance of the selected MEs. In this regard, 78.8% of the variations in the performance were jointly accounted by the six variables at 5% level of precision. Therefore, this study suggests that, first, targeted interventions should focus on strengthening access to capital through microfinance initiatives and improved credit facilities. Second, capacity-building programs should prioritize enhancing managerial skills, focusing on areas such as financial management, marketing, and operational efficiency. Third, efforts to streamline regulatory processes and foster a more business-friendly environment are crucial.

    (wolkite universty, 2024-05) Tadele Gebre
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of credit risk management on the performance of MFIs in the case of Gurage Zone, Central Ethiopia Region. The study employed descriptive survey and explanatory research design along with quantitative approach. The target population of the study was all employees in the six MFIs found inGurage Zone. 84 employees were the sample of the study. Purposive, proportionate stratified, and simple random sampling techniques were used to select MFIs, administrative towns andworedas and employees. Primary data were collected using self – administered questionnaires for employees of the selected MFIs. Descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient analysis, multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the quantitative data and to investigate the effect of credit policies, credit administration unit, top management support, credit assessment, credit monitoring, and debt collection practices on the performance of MFIs. All quantitative data were analyzed using a Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26. The findings of the study revealed that all the five credit risk management practices have significant and positive effect on the performance MFIs, butdebt collection practice has no significant effect. However, 79.7% of the variations in the performance of MFIs were jointly accounted by the six variables, among these variables; top management support practice has the greatest contribution. Therefore, the performance ofMFIs in most of the administrative towns and words becomes stagnant, unless these credit risk management practices are appropriately pledged. Thus, this study suggests that management bodies of the MFIs in the zone better to give more emphasis by focusing robust credit risk management practices, so that MFIs can improve their performance and contribute to the broader economic development of the study area. Moreover, continuous evaluation and adaptation of these practices will be essential to navigating the dynamic financial landscape.
