An Assessment of the Socio- Economic and Health Impacts of Chewing chats on users: the case of Gubre sub city

Abstract

The main objective of this study was identifying the socio- economic impacts of chewing chat, in the case of Gubre sub city. Hence, in order to achieve this objective, mixed research approach and both primary and secondary data source were used. To conduct this study the researcher was selected 32 respondents by using purposive sampling techniques. In this study the major finding was the basic socio-economic and health impacts of chewing chat on users. Among the social impacts includes af ected relationship, family disfavor, and loss of integration and less socially acceptance. In addition to this, chewing chat had an impact on economy of users. The economic impacts includes: loss of working hours or absenteeism from work, working ability and capacity, and also spends money to buy chat. Other impacts of chewing chats on users were health impacts. Health Impacts related to chewing chat consists; disturbance of minds, decreasing of appetite, lack of sleep, dental beauty dentations, physical deformity, transition to other various addiction. The key recommendation of the study were it should be create an attitudinal changing program widely used in media and by using publishing dive erent banners, brochure and continuous attitudinal reformation programs in the study area. The government bodies should be establish economic improvement programs for many people particularly to low scale economy groups in the study area.
